Latin name: Hesperantha coccinea
Article by the Vancouver Island Master Gardeners Association
The common names of Hesperantha coccinea, a native of South Africa, are Crimson Flag Lily, or Crimson River Lily. These demonstrate its bright red colour, its love of moist environments and its resemblance to irises. This upright, scarlet flowering perennial provides striking colour in a late season garden. Its elegant blooms brighten the garden from late summer to late fall, sometimes extending into winter if the weather is warm enough. Its bright green leaves are attractive on their own and are often evergreen in our mild climate. It can naturalize to form colourful clumps, but its spread can be easily controlled.
Hesperantha is an undemanding plant to grow as long as consistent moisture is maintained during the growing season. Winter wetness might be a challenge as it will not do well in standing water. Mulching will further protect it from winter cold and drying winds in summer. It may be deadheaded to prolong flowering. Cut back any dead foliage in late winter or early spring before new growth.
It has no notable pests or diseases and is reportedly deer and rabbit resistant.
